CLASSIC CONTEMPORARY:
LICHTENSTEIN, WARHOL & FRIENDS

Organized in partnership with the
Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego
January 23, 2009 – September 7, 2009

The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of Classic Contemporary: Lichtenstein, Warhol and Friends on January 23, 2009. Organized in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), the exhibition features important paintings and sculpture by major Contemporary artists, primarily from the 1960s and ’70s.

The iconic artists featured in this exhibition were the leaders of their generation–Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Roy Lichtenstein and Ed Ruscha, among others. Their innovative use of material and imagery was at the forefront of Pop Art and Minimalism worldwide. The exhibition includes many of the major works featured in MCASD’s collection, primarily large-scale paintings along with sculpture and works on paper. Specific examples include Frank Stella’s Sabra III (1967), strikingly decorative, monumental canvas sections derived from the lines of a mechanical protractor curve; Roy Lichtenstein’s Mirror (1971), a deadpan depiction of a mirror’s surface that preposterously reflects its own schematized representation; and Sol LeWitt’s Floor Piece #4 (1976), one in a series of compositions based on the cube–his fundamental modular unit. Classic examples of Abstract Expressionism by Hans Hofmann and Clyfford Still, precursors to the ’60s movements, will also be on view. This contemporary presentation will advance Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art’s dedication to enhancing the cultural landscape of Las Vegas.
