12 + 7: Artists and Architects of CityCenter
On View through April 2010

This must-see exhibition features sculptures, drawings, paintings and models by 12 of the contemporary artists and seven of the master architects whose work revolutionized the Las Vegas landscape when CityCenter Las Vegas opened to the public on December 16, 2009.

12 + 7: Artists and Architects of CityCenter offers a behind-the-scenes look at the highly anticipated CityCenter development, showcasing artworks by a selection of artists featured in CityCenter's Fine Art Collection, alongside early sketches and architectural models of CityCenter's soaring towers, and retail and entertainment district. This assemblage of work illustrates the symbiotic relationship between the métiers of art and architecture by peeling back the layers of a particular artist's work, exploring its architectural or spatial relationship (take for example, Jenny Holzer's corner piece or Antony Gormley's standing figure); but also by providing insight into how each architect's design became an integral component of the overall urban vision of CityCenter - as their buildings evolved, they developed much like a piece of artwork.

Artworks on display include Claes Oldenburg's "Typewriter Eraser" (1977), a tabletop version of the large-scale sculpture of the same name installed just outside Mandarin Oriental; Peter Wegner's "Day for Night, Night for Day" (2009), a study of the solar- and lunar-themed paper installation inside the Vdara lobby; and Maya Lin's "Colorado River" (2008), a seven-foot version of the 84-foot silver cast also of the Colorado river suspended inside ARIA Resort & Casino. The exhibition also features early models of the Pelli-designed, 61-story ARIA; drawings of Rafael Viñoly's distinctive, crescent-shaped Vdara; and drawings and models of the Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed Mandarin Oriental.
